The Caspian Snowcock (Tetraogallus caspius) is a large, ground-dwelling bird native to Iran’s alpine and rocky regions. It is known for its strong, powerful legs, allowing it to navigate steep terrains with ease. This bird primarily inhabits elevations above 2,000 meters, often found in the Zagros and Alborz mountains. The Caspian Snowcock’s feathers provide excellent camouflage against rocky landscapes, keeping it safe from predators. Its diet consists mainly of seeds, berries, and small invertebrates, making it an omnivore. The male is known for its loud, echoing calls, especially during mating season. This species is an important part of Iran’s wildlife, playing a role in seed dispersal within its habitat. Due to habitat loss and hunting, some local populations have declined, though conservation efforts are in place. The Caspian Snowcock remains a symbol of Iran’s mountainous biodiversity.
